Till the world ends.

Laura Sanemeterio, Ana Crespo

When being away from home means knowing more and knowing more means speaking English

Mates, it´s time to face the truth. Even Steve Penny, the sales director of Hawke (a Spanish company) knows it: we live in a globalized world, where English, is the most important language. Why is that? The answer is very simple. It’s an easy language to talk and write. The grammar is not complicated, at the very least, not so much. Also, it has a lot of vocabulary, which makes it more precise, and of course, it´s one         of the most widespread language in the world. We have to assume it, we have to know English. We have to speak English. We must be able to communicate in English if we want to stand a chance in our jobs.
We should know by now that we are not only asked to be well prepared for our future professions, we are also asked to fend for ourselves in foreign languages, so that we can be reliable. Just think about what you want to do: where you   want to work or live, traveling… For all these, you need to speak foreign languages. However, there are many problems in Spain related to language learning. In our country it seems impossible to find a young person in Secondary School who can speak English correctly. Of course, all of us, are not equally ‘talented’, and speaking with a little accent is not so bad, but apart from our pronunciation skills, we all should be able to build coherent phrases, simple or complicated, shouldn’t we? Thankfully, people are starting to be concerned, and we are starting to be more demanding with the students. Now, with the Bolonia Plan, if you want to get to University, you must have a B1 level of English, and to end it, you must reach the B2. It is believed that a B2 level is enough to live and work abroad. Which is true, if you practice enough. Maybe, we should remember, when it comes to learning language, that writing is not the most vital fact, but speaking is basic. Schools should pay more attention to the speaking out loud and chatting skills of their students if they want them to be able to really develop well abroad. Because, sometimes, extra-curricular academies, are not the best option and, most likely, English will keep on being the global language till the world ends.
